Landing Rates
Landing rates are not a competition!
Smooth landings feel great, but chasing unrealistically low vertical speeds can be unsafe and is not required for approval.
Approval Thresholds
- Landings under -600 fpm:Accepted (counts for your PIREP and hours)
- Landings over -600 fpm:REJECTED (PIREP will not be approved)
Target Range: Aim for a consistent landing rate between -150 and -300 fpm for realism, safety, and passenger comfort.
Best Practices for Landing Rates
- Fly a stabilized approach: Maintain the correct speed, descent rate, and configuration all the way to touchdown.
- Do not “float” or force a greaser: Floating or dragging the approach for a soft touchdown increases runway overrun risk.
- Land within the touchdown zone: This is safer than aiming for a softer touchdown further down the runway.
- Trust your training and SOPs: Fly the aircraft by the book; a “good” landing is a safe, on-speed, on-zone landing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why not reward the lowest landing rates?
Real-world airlines prioritize safety and reliability over “greasers.” Consistently low vertical speeds often come at the expense of safe technique.
What if I have a bounce or hard landing?
Landings over -600 fpm will result in PIREP rejection. Focus on stabilized approaches to avoid bounces or firm touchdowns.
Do weather or crosswinds affect my score?
Difficult conditions are considered by staff, but the same vertical speed limits apply. Always brief and fly the safest approach possible.
Quick Summary:
- Don’t chase the lowest possible number.
- Fly safely and consistently.
- Keep it between -150 and -300 fpm if possible.
